Rumbie Ncube has been doing hair since she was sixteen. She trained at a beauty college in Bulawayo, worked in three salons across the city, and for two years ran her own chair — until the rent made it impossible.
"The salon space was ZWG 3,200 a month," she says. "That's before product, before equipment, before anything. I was spending more just being open than I was making."
She closed the chair in January and went fully mobile — working from clients' homes. The problem, she quickly found, was trust.
"People are cautious about letting someone they don't know into their house. Even if I'm just coming to do hair. A few clients asked me if I had any kind of verification — and I didn't know what to say."
A fellow mobile service provider in Bulawayo mentioned Graft. Rumbie signed up, completed the KYC identity verification (uploading her national ID and a selfie), and within 72 hours had a verified profile badge — a small gold checkmark that appears on her public listing.
"I didn't think that little badge would do anything," she admits. "I was wrong."
Within her first week on the platform, she received seven enquiries. She converted four into bookings. The clients, she noticed, mentioned the badge explicitly in their messages. *"I saw you're verified — that's why I reached out."*
Rumbie treats her Graft profile like a shop window. She photographs her work — braids, relaxers, loc maintenance, bridal styles — and posts them as portfolio images. She responds to every message within fifteen minutes. She has a clear service menu with starting prices, her service radius in Bulawayo, and her availability calendar.
"I charge ZWG 150 for a wash and set, ZWG 280 for braids, ZWG 400 for loc retwist," she explains. "It's all on my profile. Clients know before they message me. No haggling, no surprises."
Six weeks after joining, Rumbie's diary was full. She now turns away bookings — something she never imagined saying when she was struggling to make rent.
The escrow system has changed how she thinks about her work financially. "Before Graft, I had clients who'd cancel on the day — I'd have already bought product and set aside my time. Now, once a booking is confirmed and the escrow is loaded, I know that time is protected. If they cancel without notice, there's a process."
She's currently training her younger sister to take overflow bookings under a second Graft profile. "There's enough work in Bulawayo for both of us. The city just needed a safe way for people to find us."
