How escrow works, step by step
Client funds escrow
Once an offer is accepted, the client pays through Graft via EcoCash, InnBucks, Visa, or Mastercard. The money is held by Graft — not sent to the worker yet.
Work begins
The worker is notified that payment is secured and begins the job. The client has full visibility of progress through the in-app chat and milestone tracking.
Worker marks complete
When the work is finished, the worker marks the milestone as done. The client receives a notification to review and confirm.
Client confirms — funds released
The client confirms the work is done and the escrow is released to the worker, minus the 8% protection fee. Payment arrives within 1–2 business days.
72-hour automatic release
Once a worker marks a milestone as done, the client has 72 hours to confirm or dispute. If the client does not respond within that window, the escrow is automatically released to the worker. This prevents clients from holding payment indefinitely after work is completed.
What happens in a dispute?
If the client is not satisfied with the work, they can raise a dispute before confirming completion. Here is exactly what happens:
Dispute raised — escrow frozen
The moment a dispute is opened, the escrow is frozen. Neither party can access the funds until the case is resolved.
Evidence reviewed by Graft
Both parties can submit evidence: photos, messages, contracts, and any other documentation. Our team reviews everything within 48 hours.
Decision issued
Graft issues a binding decision: full release to the worker, full refund to the client, or a partial split based on the evidence. The decision is final.
Cash payment option
Some clients prefer to pay the worker in cash directly. Graft supports this — but requires the protection fee to still go through Graft.
You pay the 8% protection fee online
The protection fee is processed through Payonify (EcoCash, OneMoney, Visa, etc.) and goes to Graft.
The worker is registered on the job
The contract exists in Graft — reviews, dispute records, and communication are all tracked.
Cash payments are not escrow-protected
The full job amount is paid directly to the worker in cash on completion. Graft cannot recover this money if there is a dispute over the work quality.

The 8% protection fee is deducted from the escrow amount before releasing to the worker. For example, on a $100 job, the worker receives $92.
